Electromagnets

Hello! Let get started. Electromagnets are devices made of soft iron that behaves as magnet only when current is flowing through them. They lose all their magnetic properties when current stop flowing through them.

Dear, if not for electromagnetism; electric bell and some others essential devices couldn't have exist. Electromagnets are used for constructing electric bell. They are also used for constructing telephone ear piece. They are employed as magnetic separator. The previous statement made me to remember an Indian movie that I watched when I was seven years old, the movie is DHOOM. There; in one of its scenes, I watched a thief applying electromagnetism in one of his escape from the policemen at the museum. Electromagnets are also used for lifting heavy metals. Let us now discuss some of the electromagnets.

The carbon-granule microphone is popularly used in amplifying sound ( making it louder). It works on
the principle of change in resistance.

Moving Coil Galvanometer

A galvanometer is a device used in detecting the direction of the flow of current. It can be also used in measuring small current and small voltage.
A galvanometer consists of horse shoe magnet, control spring, soft cylinder, and a rectangular coil. A galvanometer is said to be sensitive if it can detect small current. The following are the factors that enhance the sensitivity of a galvanometer.

1. The use of weak control spring.
2. The use of a strong magnet to provide high magnetic flux density.
3. Using coil of large area.
4. Using high number of turns in the coil.
